Your First Day of Court
Anytime in court can be wrought with anxiety or nerve-wracking. Preparation and speaking to your lawyer is key.
1. Make sure you have the address and know where your court hearing is. Contact your attorney, make sure you know the time and courthouse and court room number the day before.
2. Dress appropriately. Ask your attorney. Dress as its a job interview.Â
3. Once there observe Courtroom etiquette:
- Stand when the judge enters or exits the courtroom.
- Turn off your cell phone or set it to silent.
- Refrain from talking or chewing gum during proceedings.
- Address the judge as “Your Honor” or “Judge”. Pay close attention to the judge’s instructions, your attorney’s advice, and the proceedings.
4. When addressing the judge or answering questions, speak clearly, directly, and respectfully.
